Add or remove VAT from any amount instantly. Supports any VAT rate.
Value Added Tax works differently depending on which direction you're calculating from — adding VAT to a net price to find the final amount a customer pays, or working backward from a VAT-inclusive price to find out how much of it was actually tax. Both calculations come up constantly in invoicing, pricing, and bookkeeping, and it's easy to get the formula backward if you're doing it by hand.
This tool handles both directions and includes the most common VAT rates used across Europe, along with support for any custom rate.
Why can't I just multiply by the VAT rate to remove it from a gross price?
Because VAT is calculated on the net amount, not the gross amount. To reverse it correctly, you divide by (1 + rate), not simply multiply the gross price by the rate — the two give different, incorrect results.
Which VAT rate should I use?
This depends on your country and the type of goods or service — most countries have a standard rate and one or more reduced rates for specific categories like food or books. Check your local tax authority if you're unsure which applies.
Is this calculator suitable for official tax filing?
