These stylish text effects aren't actually different fonts in the traditional sense — they're real Unicode characters that happen to look bold, italic, or otherwise stylized, mixed in among the standard alphabet in the Unicode character set. Why does this work on Instagram but not everywhere?
It works virtually everywhere that accepts plain text input, including Instagram. Some platforms with very strict input filtering may occasionally strip unusual Unicode characters, but this is uncommon.
Are these actual fonts I'm installing?
No — nothing is installed. These are pre-existing Unicode characters that simply render as styled versions of the alphabet in any app or browser that supports Unicode, which is nearly universal today.
Why do some special characters not have a stylized version?
Not every letter or symbol has a corresponding stylized Unicode character defined for every style — where one doesn't exist, the original character is shown instead.
